Multiple Drug Resistant and Extended Spectrum Beta Lactamase Producing Uropathogens

My dissertation for the partial fulfillment of Master’s in Medical Microbiology titled Prevalence of Multi-Drug Resistant (MDR) and Extended Spectrum β lactamases (ESBLs) producing uropathogens in asymptomatic pregnant women.

The study was conducted in Paropakar Maternity and Women’s Hospital, Thapathali, from January 2011 to March 2011, with the objective to isolate bacteria causing urinary tract infection (UTI) in Asymptomatic Pregnant Women and to determine their antimicrobial resistance trend and ESBL activity. During this period, 300 mid-stream urine samples collected were investigated by Semiquantitative culture technique, Chemical test, Microscopy and Antibiotic susceptibility test. ESBL test by Disc-Synergy method was performed for those found to be Multiple Drug Resistant organisms.


 

Role of Eukaryotic Translation Elongation Factor 1 Beta 2 (eEF1B2) in DNA Damage Response and Cancer.

I also co-worked on Role of Eukaryotic Translation Elongation Factor 1 Beta 2 (eEF1B2) in DNA Damage Response and Cancer. The research was performed in Ajou University, Laboratory of Biological Sciences. This research aimed to study the non-canonical functions of the eEF1B2 especially upon DNA damage and Cancer. EEF1B2, a subunit of eEF1B, a protein that stimulates the GDP-GTP exchange on eEF1A during peptide elongation, has been found to be overexpressed in various Cancers. Since DNA damage is the important hallmark of cancer, we intend to find out the functions of eEF1B2 in DNA Damage Response.

Various Cancer Cell Lines were cultured. Simultaneously various siRNA and other required primers were designed. Of the various cell lines (Wild type, siRNA transfected and Irradiated/Chemical treated) were analyzed for protein assembly, their interaction and localization.

Some of the cell lines used*:- MDA MB 231, MCF 7, Hs578T, BT549, HCC70, T47D, BT474, 435S, HEK293, U2OS, HeLa.
